Large Dog Crates 101
In this article I will be talking about dogs crates and especially large dog crates because all my dogs are large breeds so that is what I talk about the most in this article and this website. Large dogs are my passion but lots of the advice given here can also be used with small breeds.
Large dog crates can be found at most pet stores or farm stores or even discount stores like Wal-Mart, or you can do your shopping on the internet. If you buy your large dog crate at your local discount store like Wal-Mart be prepared to sacrifice quality and comfort for a cheaper crate. If you buy your dog crates online you can usually find great deals on high quality crates with zero shipping cost.
Traveling with Your Large Dog
Most airlines have tips on their websites if you are planning on shipping your pet or dog. It is highly recommended that you stay away from cheap large dog crates if you are planning on traveling with your dog. Remember if you are planning on flying commercially you must buy or have access to an airline approved dog crate.
Type of Large Dog Crates
Large dog crates come in the form of hard plastic, soft covered, wire and you can even get the type that are collapsible for easy storage. If you are simply looking for large dog crates for training purposes, you don’t really need a fancy crate and the price is usually pretty reasonable if you purchase one online. .
As a guide when looking to purchase a crate, if you have an adult dog you will need to measure your dog to make sure you get the right size, height, length and weight. To measure your dog for the proper height and length, measure from the tip of the dog nose to the top of the tail, and then from the ground to the top of its head. Your dog should be able to turn around and lay completely down lengthwise and stand to its complete height for the crate to be a proper fit.
Large dog crates range in size from 16.5 to 35 inches in height. Large Dog Crates that are 35 inches tall will hold an extra large dog up to 33 inches tall. Small dog crates come as little as 10 inches tall, which if you have a yorkie or similar size dog will work just fine. It is very important that you choose the right size for your dog. A crate that is to small will be uncomfortable and dangerous and a crate that is to big also could be dangerous and the dog will be tempted to go to the bathroom in a crate that is too large.
A large dog crate cover will come in handy when crate training your dog. The cover makes it dark and if you are leaving your dog home alone inside the crate he will not be as frighten when the crate is covered.
Large dog crates can be a wonderful investment for your home or to use as a kennel for when you have company and want to keep the pets away from your guest. Most internet websites and pet stores have a guide that you can use for obtaining the right sizes and following the appropriate weight requirements for large dog crates if you still need more help.
Also, when you first start to use the large dog crates, your pets will be frightened and will be a little noisy until they know that you are coming back for them. So start them out in 30 minute increments so that they feel secure that you are going to return and let them out. It usually won’t take more than about 48 hours to 72 hours to train your pets to stay in their large dog crates and soon it will be a matter of saying “Crate” and they will go willingly.
